Like so many of the newer generation making their mark on today’s fine wines of Burgundy, Jean-Marc’s rebelliousness has paid off. After 13 years working with family Domaine Henri Boillot, Jean-Marc left, determined to make superior wines. Armed with four years experience making wines both for himself and a certain famed Leflaive brother, Jean-Marc returned to the family estate. Duly impressed by his skills, his grandfather entrusted half the vineyard to his care and Domaine Domaine Jean-Marc Boillot was born. Recognition for J M Boillot continued to grow, as did production when he additionally inherited vineyards from his maternal grandmother, the daughter of renowned owner-grower Etienne Sauzet. Chardonnay reigns supreme in many of Boillot’s Grand Cru vineyards and his most celebrated white wines are described as rich, concentrated and lengthy in finish.

Now close to seventy years old, the owner of this domaine jokingly refers to some of his vines with which he shares the same age as “young”. The estate continues to be run from his grandfather’s home, and the wines cellared in the village of Pommard. In keeping things interesting, Jean-Marc has since purchased 17 hectares in Languedoc’s village of Valflaunès and built a cellar for barrel ageing and vinification in neighbouring village Lauret. The result of Jean-Marc’s exceptional vineyards (21 appellations within) and visionary direction? “seductively rich, dense and concentrated whites and reds in all years” according to Wine Spectator’s Per-Henrik Mansson. Given Burgundy’s performance on Live-ex, it’s hard to go wrong with Burgundy wines from the star of Cote d’Or Domaine Jean-Marc Boillot. With prices averaging over €230 per bottle of Boillot’s Batard-Montrachet, this fine wine is not going unnoticed by investors and collectors alike.

Investors who weren’t quick enough to get in on the latest release of Domaine Romanee de la Conti’s leading wine will appreciate the good news that one need not shell out upwards of €22,077 per bottle to enjoy Burgundy investment returns. Just as prices of traditional investible wines rise, so do certain new discoveries in Burgundy - and they rise fast. As recent market data shows, the possibility of double-digit returns in little over a year’s time with J M Boillot’s investable fine wines is very real. The age-worthiness of these treasured Burgundy wines points to more enjoyment for years to come.
